Welded Connection Under Static Loading.

In a butt weld, two parts are joined together by the weld that fills the V-grove between the parts. Consider a butt welded connection subject to a tensile load and/or a shear force as shown the figure. The resulting stresses acting in the weld are described by the equations below:

     H = throat depth of weld
     P = tensile force
     V = shear force
     σbutt = normal stress in weld
     τbutt = shear stress in weld
     σavg = average stress in weld
     τmax = maximum shear stress
     σ1 = principal stress
